How Ready Are Students For Live Learning Online?

Over the last few decades, education has evolved drastically. Classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning methods that incorporate the flexibility of pre-recorded lessons and class meetings which are conducted via real-time videoconferencing software. Even these online methods may not be sufficient for students who prefer classrooms with real-time interaction.

Live online learning is a different method to other online learning strategies. It permits instructors and students to communicate in real-time through videoconferencing programs like Zoom. These classes let students ask questions, clarify their confusion and develop a deeper understanding of the material.

Although live learning has many advantages, some students could struggle to adapt to this kind of online learning. This study examines the students’ ability to live learn and identifies the primary factors that affect it. The findings show that motivation for learning as well as self-directed communication are the main factors that influence students’ readiness. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis as well as a post hoc tests to examine the differences between gender, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as sub-degree students. The study found that postgraduates are better equipped for live learning than undergraduates and sub-degrees.

It is suggested that instructors set clear expectations for what students are expected to know and do before, during, and after an Live Session. It is essential to provide supplementary materials, such as summaries or gist quizzes. Also outline, concept maps and study guides can be helpful. Instructors should also develop activities to reinforce the lessons students have learned – like reviewing, rehearsing debating, discussing, and analyzing.
